Mbazulike defends Akunyili

By Tony EDIKE, Awka
ELDERSTASTESMAN and First Republic Minister of Aviation, Chief Mbazulike Amechi said yesterday that any form of attack on Minister of Information, Prof. Dora Akunyili over her memo to the Federal Executive Council, FEC seeking the handover of power to Vice President Goodluck Jonathan will be stoutly resisted.

Speaking from his Ukpor home in Anambra State, Mbazulike faulted those criticizing the minister for the courageous move, saying she should rather be commended for towing a path of honour. “As one of the remaining founding fathers of this country, I cannot remain mute when I see clear signs  that the nation, which great nationalists and patriots shed their blood to found, is gravely threatened. What is happening now is an ominous threat to corporate continuation of the Nigerian Federation.

“I feel so proud of Akunyili’s boldness. I was impressed with her role in NAFDAC and had my misgiving when she was deployed to the FEC but God has revealed why she was sent there. Akunyili is there as the pride of this nation. Anybody attacking her in any form should be seen as enemy of this country and should be flushed out. This country does not belong to any region or individual.”

He submitted that since the constitution had provided that the vice_president should take over the affairs of the country in a situation where the president was unable to perform his responsibility, there was no justifiable reason why the vice president should not be empowered to act in the absence of the president.

“Jonathan will become the president whether anybody likes it or not, that is what the constitution says. Anything that happens to Jonathan or Akunyili will set up a conflagration no body can determine the end.
