Abuja—Professor Maurice Iwu, Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC Chairman, said in Abuja on Wednesday that the success of last Saturday’s governorship poll in Anambra was a tribute to the people of the state.
Presenting a Certificate of Return to Governor Peter Obi, Iwu said that “the poll was a success for the state and Nigeria in general.â€
“I also commend the 25 candidates and political parties that took part in the election for their patriotism and maturity throughout the campaign, which remains unprecedented. The exemplary performance of the police and other security agencies as well as INEC staff during the election is commendable,†he said.
He stressed that the Anambra governorship election had taught the country the lesson, “that an election is not an event but a process, which begins with the nomination of candidates.â€
The INEC chairman urged political parties to embrace internal democracy ahead of elections, arguing that only a credible nomination process could lead to credible election.
Iwu praised the people of the state for proving wrong, cynics who thought that violence would mar the exercise.
“For the first time in the history of Nigeria, a candidate emerged and almost all the other contestants came out to congratulate him,†he said.
