BENIN — Edo State Governor Adams Oshiomhole, yesterday, rescued a family trapped in their Toyota Corolla car that ran under a stationary trailer at Iruekpen, in Esan West Local Government Area of the state.
The governor, who was on his way to Benin City from his country-home, Iyamo, Estako West Local Govern-ment Area, stopped his convoy at the accident scene to rescue the victims and have them rushed to Irrua Specialist Hospital.
An eyewitness said the driver of the Toyota Corolla car was trying to avoid an oncoming trailer when he ran into the stationary vehicle.
Victims attended a funeral
The witness said one person, identified as the son of the man who drove the car, died on the spot.
The occupants of the car, the driver, whose name was given as Mr. Nath Iyekekpo-lor, his wife and another woman, were said to be on their way to Benin City after attending a funeral at Ekpoma, when the accident occurred.
However, luck was on their side as the governor’s convoy stopped by.
Oshiomhole, according to Mr. Peter Okhiria, the Chief Press Secretary, had to stop the convoy and rescue the trapped victims.
Oshiomhole said: “Beside the fact that they are Nigerians and Edo citizens, they are human beings who desperately needed attention at the time.
“I had to personally rush them to the hospital to facilitate their treatment, because if other persons had taken them there, their treatment might be delayed because today (yesterday) being Sunday, it might be a bit difficult for them to get quick attention.
“Also, the hospital authorities may ask for Police report and, of course, the issue of deposit to commen-ce treatment. All that have been taken care of now and I thank God that they are responding to treatment.â€
