Fashola vows to end maternal death in Lagos

Lagos State Governor, Babatunde Fashola has vowed to ensure that child bearing mothers  in Lagos would no longer die during birth in any of the State’s hospitals.

Fashola who made the vow while commissioning the Isolo Maternal and Child Care Centre (MCC) which is the second in the series, declared as unacceptable the high rates of deaths due to child birth.

The Governor who noted that most women lose their lives due to the distance they had to travel to access health care said with the coming of the MCCs in almost all the local government areas of the State, the era of travelling a long distance had become a thing of the past.

“As far as women and children are concerned, we are committed to reducing the number of deaths through these MCCs. What is happening today is one of the benefits of progressive government. No woman in Lagos has any reason to die during child birth as we have put all what you need in these buildings”.

He dismissed comments that Nigeria would not attain the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) sssuring that Lagos State was committed to achieving MDGs  4 and 5 which focus mainly on women and children.

He called on Nigerian women to stop traveling abroad for their deliveries as the MCCs had all it takes for safe delivery.

“Time has come when we will demonstrate to the world that we are capable. Let us set and changed those things that are unacceptable to us.”

Also, speaking, the State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Jide Idris said the MCCs were built to compliment services in the hospitals as well as serve as a referral centres for all the state’s primary health centers.
