Enugu workers in free-for-all over money

By Tony Edike

ENUGU—IT was a show of shame in Enugu yesterday as officials of Enugu State Waste Management Authority, ESWAMA,  engaged themselves in a free-for-all fight over revenue collection at the New Market area of the coal city.

An eyewitness account said that fighting broke out when Head of Operations of ESWAMA, Mr Ebube Dike went to the mini-market along Enugu-Onitsha expressway to rescue his neighbour, who was allegedly being molestated by another revenue team from the authority.

On arrival at the scene, it was learnt, Dike allegedly confronted members of the revenue team led by one Chibuike Okwo, who were newly contracted to collect revenue for ESWAMA.

The Okwo group was impatient to ask for the identity of Dike before a fight broke out.

Okwo popularly called “Doctor,” according to the account, directed a bus driver to take Dike to their head office only to realize on arrival that the person manhandled was his boss.

The eyewitness said Dike regained strength when they got into the premises of the agency and quickly asked the securitymen to luck up the bigger gate .

The entire ESWAMA premises was thrown into confusion as the two groups dealt several blows on one another, while some staff watched helplessly.

Bread sellers protest
Meanwhile, the bread sellers numbering about 50, who were allegedly attacked by Okwo’s group protested extortion by ESWAMA, singing war songs along the New market road.

Secretary of the group, Ms Clara Chigbo said the Okwo-led group had confronted them over the payment for ESWAMA’S official waste baskets.

Chigbo said, “when Okwo’s group came demanding for payment of N1,700 for their official waste basket even without notice, I tendered receipts, trying to explain to them that we had paid N1,000 in December and agreed with the ESWAMA team that came, that we will pay the remaining when they
