Ebonyi PDP factions trade insults

By Dennis Agbo

ABAKALIKI— The chairmen of the two factions of the  Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in Ebonyi State, have accuse each other of belonging to the All Nigeria Peoples Party, ANPP.

Whereas the faction led by a former council chairman, Mr. Adol Awam accused Mr. Dave Umahi of bankrolling the Ogbonaya Onu ANPP until 2006, Umahi, the said PDP chairman has also alleged that Mr. Awam left the PDP in 2003 for ANPP and since then has not returned to the party.

Umahi said that his faction would have been bothered about  Awam, if he was still a member of the PDP but that since Awam was not a bonafide member of the PDP, his party had decided to ignore Awam’s threats.

Umahi spoke at the weekend when the PDP stakeholders paid a solidarity visit on Governor Martin Elechi,  to show their support for his second term bid and that the Awam-led executive members had disclaimed Awam and returned to his (Umahi) led-faction.

However, Awam in a swiftly reaction, said that the people who disclaimed his faction before Umahi were impostors and impersonators, arguing that it could just be a coincidence of name. He said that there were many Ogbonnaya Onus in Ebonyi just as there were many Enyis. “Those that went to Umahi are not members of our executives,” said Awam.

Governor Elechi who received Umahi and other stakeholders at the Government House, said “you have spoken that there is only one strong and united party in Ebonyi State. You have assured the world that the party has no faction.

I thank you for that. When I move about the state, I see billboards, but there are no people who belong to the parties described on these billboards. There is only one party in Ebonyi State  PDP. That is the party of our choice, that is the party ruling Nigeria, that is the party in Ebonyi State.
