Council enacts by-law on girl-child education

Jega (Kebbi) — The Jega Local Government Area in Kebbi State has enacted a by-law making girl-child education compulsory.

Chairman of the Council, Alhaji Ibrahim Basaura, said yesterday in Jega that the law was to promote girl-child education as well as complement government’s policy on free education.

He said the council would henceforth provide free learning materials to female students in secondary schools and provide bursary to those studying in tertiary institutions.

Basaura explained that the law was not introduced to victimise people but to promote education and warned that any parent found violating the law would be sanctioned.
