The Vice Chancellor of Bayero University, Kano, Prof. Attahiru Jega, has expressed his appreciation to the supporters of the West Africa University Games which the institution hosted successfully.
The WAUG Football and Hockey Championships which ended on Saturday featured 24 universities from countries across West Africa with about 1000 athletes participating in the two events.
The games showcased talented male and female athletes in both football and hockey respectively.
At the group stages of the football championship, over one hundred goals were recorded. Nassarawa State University qualified for the final by defeating Kwame Nkruma University of Science and Technology, Ghana 2-1 while the semi-final match between University of Lagos and Bayero University Kano ended 1-0 in favour of UNILAG.
The final match between the University of Lagos and Nassarawa State University on Saturday ended in a 1-1 draw after 120 minutes of play. Nassarawa State University emerged winner after a penalty shootout which ended 4-3.
Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, came out best in both male and female hockey championships.
The Vice Chancellor said, â€œWe have no doubt that the objective of fostering unity among our youths in universities across the West African sub-region, for which WAUG was created, has been advanced.”
â€œOur hope is that lasting friendship and relationship may have commenced from these games, which would go a long way in strengthening unity and peaceful co-existence in our sub-region.â€
He recognized support from various state governments and corporate organizations among which are Kano, Niger, Kebbi, Kaduna and Katsina State governments.
