PORT HARCOURT—Ahead of the 2011 general election, the new Rivers Resident Electoral Commissioner of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Mr. Austin Okojie, has said the state may get over six new constituencies if the constituency delineation exercise by the commission sails through.
Okojie, who also oversees Bayelsa State and was the commissioner who cancelled the 14 April 2007 gubernatorial election in Imo State based on alleged non-compliance of participants with the Electoral Act 2006, said, however, that the proposal may be amended by the national Assembly.
Addressing the press in Port Harcourt, last weekend, the INEC boss assured that the new arrangement would ensure that constituency delimitation be concluded before the conduct of next year’s elections.
Okojie who said INEC would provide a level playing ground in every forthcoming election explained that the additional constituencies may put the state to about 40 constituencies from the current 32.
