The Peoples’ Democratic Party, PDP, is drifting without vision and could endanger the nation’s democracy, Senator Bode Olajumoke (PDP, Ondo North), and member of the party’s board of trustees has cried out.
Senator Olajumoke, at a briefing in Abuja, regretted that the original founders of the party who had positive vision for it and the country had been ostracised, noting that there was no viable opposition to check the drift of the dominant ruling party.
Olajumoke, a former chieftain of the former All Peoples Party, APP, said PDP’s original vision of a mega-party was the best for a developing country as Nigeria, but he noted that the absence of vision had rendered the party rudderless.
While calling for the recall of the party’s founding fathers, Olajumoke also called for the immediate implementation of reports of the reconciliation committees headed by former Vice-President Alex Ekwueme and former Senator Ike Nwachukwu.
Besides, Senator Olajumoke also called for the implementation of the report of the Justice Mohammed Uwais committee on electoral reform, stressing saying that the report would advance the country’s democracy.
He said: “PDP would have certainly fit that description of a dominant party for a developing economy such as ours, but unfortunately we have been bedeviled by crises over the years in the party and I think the resolution should be for PDP to critically examine the possibility of looking back at the original visionaries of PDP concept, the founding fathers of PDP with a view to bringing them back.
“They should reach out to all the founding fathers, they had ideas, they had a vision of what PDP should be like, a mega party and it is unfortunate that by lack of internal democracy and all the ills of politicking in the country that we have ostracised these original founding fathers, so there is no vision. We are drifting.
“I commend the initiatives of the Ike Nwachukwu committee but they need to expedite action because if the nation is drifting, there is nobody to guide and unfortunately there is no opposition anywhere and that is a fact,†he added.
