Obi grants amnesty to 15 prison inmates

ONITSHA—Governor Peter Obi of Anambra State has granted amnesty to 15 prisoners serving various prison terms.

A memo by the State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, who is also the chairman, State Advisory Council on Prerogative of Mercy, Mr Emmanuel Chukwuma named the lucky inmates as Ebuka Ibe, Sunday Chukwuka, Onyeka Akudu, Okechukwu Okeke and Obinna Onuegbu, who are serving various jail terms at Ibitelo, Oji and Enugu Prisons.

Others include inmates from Awka Prisons namely, Chijioke Onyebuchi Azubuike Nwobi, Ugonnia Okafor and Okwudili Ojobor.

Also freed from Onitsha Prison were Chidozie Ike, Samson Emmanuel, Nduka Okolo, Izunna Okonkwo Ndubuisi Udoba and Linus Ezeugo.

The pardon was in  exercise of the powers on the prerogative of mercy conferred on the Governor  by the 1999 constitution.

In a related development, Governor Peter Obi has called on Ndi  Anambra and Nigerians to turn a new  leaf in 2010, especially in their attitude to politics.

Obi in his new year message noted that politics was about service to the people and should be pursued with a high sense of maturity, decency and fear of God.
