The Bachelor of Dental Surgery and Bachelor of Nursing Science programmes in the Lagos State University College of Medicine, Ikeja will soon take off as the Resource Assessment Visitation of the National Universities Commission (NUC) has visited the College.

The visitation team, which was on an advisory capacity, was led by a Professor of Nursing, Prof. Bolu Fajemilehin from Obafemi Awolowo University, Ife including Professor Gbemisola Oke of the Dental Department of the University of Ibadan and Mrs. Esther Nnaji of the NUC.

Welcoming the guests, the Acting Provost of the College, Prof. Fidelis Njokanma requested for all necessary advice that will assist the College further in her attempt to establish a sound Faculty of Dentistry, to run a Dental Surgery and Nursing Science programmes in the existing Faculty of Clinical Sciences in the College.

He described LASUCOM as a law-abiding institution which despite positive report and constructive advice by members of the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) during their last visit in November refrained from admitting students into those new programmes ahead of this advisory visit.

Njokanma noted that although, the university senate had also given take-off approval to the College long ago, the College Management believed in adhering to the principle of getting it right the first time by sticking to the recommendations of all regulatory bodies and the emphatic approval of NUC before starting.

The Professor of Paediatrics however informed the visiting team that apart from having on ground adequate infrastructure for take-off, recruitment is on-going while some lecturers in the School of Nursing have been supported to pursue higher degrees in readiness for bigger challenges to be posed by the programmes.

In his remarks, the  leader of the NUC team, Prof. Bolu Fajemilehin praised the efforts of the college at establishing the Faculty of Dental Surgery and starting a Nursing Science programmes, noting that it is ideal to request for advice from NUC and MDCN before take-off as this would safeguard against any possible danger
