Imo to treat HIV positive prison inmates

By  Chidi Nkwopara

OWERRI—Imo State Government has promised that it will, as a matter of urgency, provide drugs for the treatment of HIV positive inmates of Owerri Federal Prison with a view to ameliorating their sufferings.

The Commissioner for Health, Dr. Vin Udokwu, made the promise when he visited the Nigeria Prison Service, Owerri, at the invitation of the prison’s management.

While assuring that he would pass-on what he saw on the ground to the Governor, whom he hoped will assist in the current efforts to decongest the prison, Dr. Udokwu said that henceforth, his Ministry would carry them along in the scheme of things, particularly its drug programmes.

The Commissioner, who was taken round the various cells and prison facilities by the Deputy Controller of Prisons in charge of Owerri Federal Prison, Mr. Kenneth Nwogu, lamented the terrible congestion of the cells, describing the situation as “most dehumanising.”

Speaking earlier, Nwogu decried a situation where a cell which is meant to accommodate 30 inmates is now housing 80 inmates.
