Court issues bench warrant on Edo lawmaker

By Simon Ebegbulem
BENIN—THERE is fresh tension in Edo State House of Assembly, as a magistrate’s court in Abuja has issued a bench warrant for the arrest of the member representing Akoko-Edo Constituency 1 in the House, Mr. Kabiru Adjoto.

The court, which is also trying the over 12 suspected thugs arrested during the Akoko-Edo House of Assembly re-run election, issued the warrant of arrest on the lawmaker to ascertain his role on some of the firearms recovered from the suspected thugs.

It will be recalled that Adjoto of Action Congress (AC) defeated Anselm Agbabi of the Peoples Democratic  Party (PDP) during the election, which PDP alleged was rigged by AC.

It was learnt that the warrant addressed to the Speaker of the House, Mr. Zakawanu Garuba, was served shortly after the House adjourned sitting for the day and the speaker had travelled out of town.

Consequently, the police could not enforce it since the warrant ought to be signed by the Speaker before it could be effected.

All efforts to reach Adjoto yesterday were unsuccessful as he did not pick repeated calls put across to his mobile phone.
