Council boss wants autonomy for LGAs

By Demola Akinyemi

ilorin —  Chairman, Moro Local Government in Kwara State, Alhaji Abdulraheem Adisa has called for  more autonomy for the third tier of government in Nigeria to enable it deliver dividends of democracy effectively to the people.

The journalist, turned politician, who said he had embarked on the sinking and repairs of boreholes in the council, further said his administration was commencing the electrification of Shao and Oyun with some assistance from the state government

Abdulraheem, in an interview yesterday condemned those calling for the scrapping of the local government system of administration, saying: “Tying the fate of local governments  to the other tiers of government would do more harm than good to the system.”

He argued that if the reason for calling for such an exercise was because of the alleged corruption in the system, then all other tiers of government should be scrapped.

The council boss who is also a former commissioner in the state, contended that though there should be a conscious effort at ensuring only qualified people headed the councils, only the illeterate would call for such an action.

Abdulraheem said granting autonomy to the councils would ensure a more effective and efficient system, adding that the system needed to be strengthened which would make it easier to reach the grassroots and give them a sense of belonging.

To buttress his point, the LG boss gave instances where he had received members of the council who just needed as little as  N1,500 to start a trade, noting that no state government would have time for such.
