APGA demands probe of electoral materials hijack

By  Tony Edike

ENUGU—THE All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA, has called on the Inspector General of Police, Mr. Ogbonnaya Onovo to conduct a through investigation into the alleged hijack of electoral materials meant for the conduct of the February 6 governorship election in Anambra State.

It said that the arrest of some persons with a lorry load of electoral materials in the state last Friday, should not be treated as a political matter.

National Chairman of the party, Chief Victor Umeh, who made the call while speaking with newsmen at the Coronation/Ofala festival of Igwe Onyioha Nwanjoku of Ndumeze Kingdom in Aninri Local Government of Enugu State at the weekend, said since the person who conveyed the electoral materials had claimed that he did so on behalf of a former member of the National Assembly, the police and INEC must do everything possible to expose the politician behind the criminal act.

He said that the arrest and the impoundment of the electoral material was an act of God, stressing that God has already began to answer the prayers of the people of Anambra State to expose and punish anybody, who intends to rig the forthcoming governorship election.

His words,  “people have now come to understand that election in Anambra this year has been put in the hands of God and anybody who will try to do any wrong thing will be caught.  God will expose the person and punish him.  “On January 3, this year, all the adherents of traditional religion, which we call Ndi Omenani, converged at Okwuani shrine at Nnewi and called on our ancestors and the gods to descend on anybody who will attempt to rig the election in Anambra State this year.

“On January 8, all the traditional rulers in Anambra State converged at Awka and the custodian of the Igbo Ofo, Eze Obidiegwu Onyenso, the Eze Nri, led the traditional rulers in an Ofo ritual, where the traditional rulers prayed for God to punish anybody who will want to rig the election.

“Again on January 15, Christians of all denominations converged at Awka and all the Bishops from all Christian denominations celebrated an inter-denominational service, where they prayed God to ensure that there is a peaceful, free and fair election in Anambra State and asked God to expose anybody who will want to rig the election”, he added.
