ABEOKUTA – GOVERNOR Olugbenga Daniel of Ogun State yesterday said although he has no specific candidate in mind to hand over to in 2011, he would however, ensure that the next Governor of the state would not be a “rogue”.

Answering questions on a live Television programme “Governor’s Forum” in Abeokuta, Governor Daniel said he would be failing in his duties and responsibilities to the citizens of the state if he allowed “unserious elements” become Governor of the state.

He said “I do not have a candidate. Having gone round the whole state, people would expect me to have a candidate. But from experience, it is probably not worth it. However, I will be failing in my duties if I allow the reigns of power to be taken by rogues.

“We have a fair idea of some personalities going about, but if I open my eyes and allow some unserious elements I would be failing in my duties and responsibilities to the people of this state. I am the Chief Security Officer and there are classified documents about some of these elements, but if we see danger in sight, then we may have to make them public.”

Daniel said the issue of which geo-political zone in the state would produce the next governor would have to be addressed through democratic means, saying that it was not for him to say which area would produce the governor.

He explained that when he was to be elected in 2003, the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, zoned the Governorship to either Remo or Yewa and that even then people from other zones still contested in the primaries before he was eventually elected as the candidate of the party.

He said “politics is about number and democracy, the party in 2003 unofficially zoned it to two locations, Remo and Yewa, but other people contested, including people from Egba, Mrs. Titi Ajanaku and Commander Rasheed Raji, and democracy prevailed.

“This one will not be different. People who have the advantage would enjoy it, but I am going to stand firmly against people who do not have political relevance trying to use tribal sentiments.
