VVF centre treats 337 patients in Ebonyi

ABAKALIKI—Determined to give succour to the women and children in Ebonyi State and Nigeria at large, wife of the state Governor, Mrs. Josephine Elechi, has said that the South-East Regional Fistula Centre at the State University Teaching Hospital, Abakaliki has so far repaired over 337 Visco Virginal Fistula (VVF) patients within and outside the state.

Mrs. Elechi ,through her pet project, the Mother and Child Care Initiative (MCCI), established the VVF centre to give free repair of the fistula patients in the state and other parts of the country, adding that 15 other patients newly repaired were currently at the centre awaiting discharge.

She disclosed this at the 2009 Ebonyi Women’s Day celebration held at Abakaliki Township stadium which was aimed at creating the necessary awareness of enhancing effective participation of women in community and national development and also to show case the potentials and capabilities of women.

According to Mrs. Elechi, the theme of this year’s celebration ‘that the Mother and Child may live’ which she said is in tandem with the objectives of her pet project MCCI used as an instrument through which issues related to the well-being of women, children, the girl-child and youths were addressed.

She further said that Ebonyi women express their solidarity with the Nigerian nation and the international community at large, for their strive towards upholding the fundamental human rights of women and that of the girl-child.
