Rights group condemns imposition of illegal levy on Aba traders

By  Anayo Okoli

Aba—An Aba based Human Rights group, Justice and Peace Foundation, HRJPF, has condemned  the alleged imposition of what it called “illegal levy of N3,000” on the traders in Ariaria International Market, Aba, Abia State.

The group also condemned the alleged involvement of the Bakassi Boys, who were being used to force the traders to pay the levy.

Last week, the traditional ruler of Aba, Eze Isaac Ikonne, had called on the state Governor to look into the levies, warning that it could lead to the women rioting,  similar to what happened in 1929 in the city.

The rights group  in a statement by its Secretary, Mrs. Toyin Oloye, also accused the Abia State Government of approving without any enabling laws, levies imposed on “the suffering, depressed, perishing and dying market traders in Abia State.”
