By Gbenga Olarinoye

OSOGBO—There was complete apathy on the part of the electorate in the re-run elections for Osun East Senatorial District and Osogbo State Constituencies held yesterday in Osun State as voters loyal to the opposition Action Congress, AC, stayed away from the voting centres.

Contrary to widespread belief that the re-run election will witness unprecedented violence similar to the 14 April 2007 election, yesterday’s  election was relatively peaceful with security men fully in place while most voters stayed away from the polling booths with members of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, storming the polling units to cast their votes for their respective candidates.

Other political parties that participated in the election include, Peoples Progressive Alliance, PPA, and the United Nigeria Peoples Party, UNPP.

While the Osun East Senatorial election was held in 10 local government areas of Atakunmosa-West, Atakunmosa-East, Ilesa-East, Ilesa-West, Obokun, Oriade, Ife-South, Ife-East, Ife Central, Ife- North Local Government Council areas of the State, that of Osogbo State Constituency took place in Osogbo municipality.

Election was peaceful in all the areas visited with no recorded case of violence, ballot snatching or ballot stuffing.

However, polling agents of AC stayed away from all the polling units visited.
