Makurdi Medical Centre declared death zone

By Tordue Salem
ABUJA — The House of Representatives Committee on Health has declared the Federal Medical Centre, FMC, in Makurdi, Benue State, a death zone, with some of the worst facilities in the world.

Chairman of the Committee, Rep. Lad Alaba-Ojomo (PDP/Ondo), declared this after a 2010 budget defence of the Health Ministry at the National Assembly.

“The services and structures are in shambles. Treatment much endangered and the facilities are worst in the world,” were best descriptions offered the Federal Medical Centre, Markudi, by the House of Representatives following which it declared the health centre a disaster zone.

Alaba-Ojomo then urged the Minister of Health, Prof. Babatunde Oshotimehin, to urgently address the problem, saying it is unacceptable for the minister to have such health facilities operate without water since it was built.

He also queried the hospital workers’ attitude towards patients, which the committee said they observed during their last oversight on health institutions.

The committee charged the minister to urgently arrest the ugly trend while declaring the facility an emergency area until steps were taken to make it a viable health facility.
