Kano/Jigawa Customs exceeds revenue target, confiscates contraband

Operatives of the Kano /Jigawa Customs Area Command of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS)collected N925, 751,969.34 between January and November 2009, N500,000.00 less its target.

The Command  at the weekend also  made  seizure of a large consignment of contraband textile materials and other banned items worth millions of naira.

Disclosing this to newsmen in Kano recently. Controller of the Command, Comptroller Usman Kankara Bello, expressed satisfaction that the command’s anti_smuggling activities has continued to yield positive results, following the latest seizures.

Bello assured the Federal Government that the Command will exceed its target before year end
The seizures include made-in-Malaysia vegetable oil in Jerry cans, textile materials in bales, guinea brocade materials and bales of second-hand clothes.

The seizures, according to the Controller, were made over the weekend by the Area Command’s patrol officers, led by Deputy Superintendent of Customs, Abubakar Dalhatu Zurmi at  various locations, including Maiduguri/Kano Road.

According to Bello, the vehicles conveying the contraband include two Volkswagen Jetta cars, which were arrested along Kwanar Dumawa on Babura Road in Jigawa State and Achilafiya/Daura Road, adding that another Toyota model F Bus, used for the smuggling activity was also arrested along Kano/Gwarzo Road.

The Customs boss, who used the forum to warn prospective smugglers, said Kano/Jigawa Area of operations is a no go area for smugglers, disclosed that the impounded vehicles, with their contents, alongside six suspects are presently in the custody of the Area Command, while investigations, according to him, is in progress to fish out those behind the smuggling racket.

Bello, who also used the opportunity to restate the Comptroller-General of Customs’ directive that smugglers should desist from their nefarious activities which constitutes economic sabotage, disclosed that the Command  generated a total of N925, 751,969.34 from January to November this year, signifying that the Command is on its way to not only meeting the target of N992, 937,939.22 but to also surpass it.

“The Command’s impressive revenue generation began from the month of June 2009, when it netted a whopping N116, 508,097.20 to surpass the target of N82, 412,422.01, which represents 41.3 per cent above the target.”

Also, the Customs boss recalled that this is not the first time the Command has been making seizures, pointing out that earlier in the year, precisely in July, the Command made seizures of assorted textile materials and fake medicaments/drugs, which, he said attracted the attention of the former Comptroller- General of Customs, Dr Nwadialo Bernard_Shaw, who commended the Command for that feat and urged the Command not to relent in its efforts against smuggling.
U. K Bello, however, promised to redouble his efforts towards frustrating the efforts of smugglers in the Kano/Jigawa Area Command.
