Golfers gather for Oba of Benin Honours

The maiden edition of Oba of Benin Golf Tournament to teed-off yesterday December 5th and holes out today  at the Benin Golf Club in Benin City and the captain of the club Dr Charles Ajayi has confirmed that over one hundred players are taken part in the event.

The event which is being hosted in honour of the revered Benin Monarch HRM Omo-n’oba Erediauwa is the first major event that the club would be hosting after the new club house was commissioned last month.

According to the captain, the new club house structure has changed the ambiance of the facility and the course too has been the better for it, especially from the standpoint of some upgrades and maintenance that the fairways and greens were treated to during the year.

“I guess this event would be a beginning of many good things for the club. As a club we would work hard to see it being continued and most importantly, it will set tone for a new social atmosphere for the club in the wake of the new club house that was commissioned recently”

He added that the tournament is being positioned to be the signature tournament of the club and it is being proposed to be staged every first week  of the December to coincide with the Igue Festival.

The event would be won by the best gross player and is open to all amateur players. Some of the honours to be contested for include best nett, best gross, (in both men and ladies categories) longest drive, nearest to the pin while veteran players would also be honoured too in the two days event. The Oba Of Benin trophy is donated to the Oba himself and is a bronze caste trophy moulded by his blacksmith.
