Ex-NUPENG President, Akpatason, eyes Senate

By Victor Ahiuma-Young
BENIN—There are indications that immediate past President of the National Union  of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG), Comrade Peter Akpatason, will seek to represent Edo North in the Senate come 2011.

The plans by Comrade Akpatason, who is also a National Trustee of Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), to contest the Edo North Senatorial election is said to have elicited positive reactions from the people of Edo North.

President-General of Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC), Comrade Peter Esele, who disclosed this at the just concluded 2nd. quadrennial delegates conference of NUPENG in Abuja, described Comrade Akpatason as an achiever and a consummate leader who has a penchant for people’s welfare and interest.

Reacting to the news of Comrade Akpasaon’s interest in the senate, Edo State governor, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, said Comrade Akpatason would be a veritable asset in the senate and called on every Nigerian who desired a quality and robust senate to rally round him.

According to him, “no matter how well you perfect the act of carrying placards,  organizing the most deadly strike and issue the most potent ultimatum, unfortunately, Nigeria will only change when the country is governed by people who hold those views that you canvass.

“No one will be in power and allow you to dictate to him how he is to govern. Peter coming from my own constituency, not only coming from Edo State, but also from my own senatorial zone, I have had the opportunity to mention to him that I will do the best I can to make sure that he does not repeat my own mistakes, and that he uses my own strength.”
