Onitsha—Ohaneze-Ndi-Igbo, a socio-cultural group, says it will formulate and support ideas that will lead to a free, fair and credible governorship election in Anambra State.
Chief Philip Atamuo, President of Ohaneze in Anambra State, stated this in an interview with newsmen at Ogidi, Idemili North Local Government Area of the state.
Atamuo, who spoke ahead of the 6 February 2010, governorship election in the state, said the “group, an umbrella body of all Igbo worldwide,†would mobilise the people to vote.
“As a group, we seek the general and ultimate welfare of the Igbo people. We want a credible and verifiable election in the state, where Ndi Anambra will be at liberty to elect their Governor. When a credible election is conducted, the government will get massive support from its citizenry since it was a product of their wishes.
“We want our people’s vote to count since we are formulating ideas and mobilising them to have confidence in the electoral system,†he said.
Atamuo said to ensure a free and fair election, the group evolved a programme to work with INEC, traditional rulers and town unions in the various communities.
“We had met with INEC to make sure that the voters registration list is properly done and also impress it on INEC to sensitise Anambra people on the benefits of voting.
As a group, we have started sensitisation programmes in all parts of the state, to tell the people that their votes count and show them how to protect their votes. We had met various political parties and cautioned them to shun rigging and any other electoral malpractice and they have agreed to abide by the electoral rules.
“Presently, we are sensitising Igwes (traditional rulers) and town union members to watch-out for unknown persons coming to vote or do any sort of manipulation at the polling booth in their communities,” he said.
bonds proceeds would also be used to complete all on-going commercially oriented projects, such as the Regional Market and the 5-Star hotel,†he said, adding that it woud give the state government a more comfortable posture to focus strategically in developing social and economic infrastructure like roads, hospitals, energy and water supply.
“This exercise will yield its resources in the first half of the year as arrangements towards that had reached an advanced stage. The external loans of N2.023billion is targeted to specific World Bank-assisted projects like the HSDP11, CSDP, HIV, Urban roads among others,†said Governor Elechi.”
