Aliero cautions youths against thuggery

ABUJA — Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Senator Adamu Aliero, has warned youths to be weary of being used as thugs by politicians in the 2010 area council elections.

The Minister who was represented by the Secretary, FCT Social Development Secretariat, Hajia Habiba Sanni Kalgo, yesterday at the delegates of the National Youth Council of Nigeria, NYCN, FCT chapter, expressed fears that Nigerian youths had been turned into mercenaries for rigging elections.

He said: “The youths should not accept responsibilities which are not good for them. Acting as thugs during elections is not good at all. It is not good for their families, their immediate communities and definitely it is not good for the nation at large.”

He, however, expressed hope on the abilities of Nigerian youths, adding thatif given the right incentives,they have the potentials to move the nation forward.

His words: “They have proved that Nigeria has hope, Nigeria has future because the youths that we see here today are the representation that we have in the future. So with proper encouragement and guidance, our youths can do better than what we think.”

Earlier in her remarks, Director of the Secretariat Gender Programme, Mrs Hanatu Attah, lauded increase in participation of females in NYCN.
