2011: Apugo makes case for Uwais’s report

By Anayo Okoli

Umuahia—A foundation member of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Prince Benjamin Apugo, says that it was only a comprehensive implementation of the recommendations of the Justice Mohammed Uwais panel report on Electoral Reforms that would solve Nigeria’s election problems and move the nation’s democratic experiment to the next level.

Apugo, a Board of Trustees (BOT) member of the party, who spoke with journalists in Umuahia, said he supported the recommendations of the committee. He also condemned  some PDP Governors,  who he said were opposed to the recommendations. He said the Governors were only trying to put the nation in a mess.

Apugo said the Uwais’s report was the best thing that could happen to Nigeria’s democratic growth, saying that it was for the best interest of the nation. He urged his party leadership and the government to follow the voice of the people and implement the report in full.

He said that the mega party being put together by some opposition groups cannot solve the nation’s electoral problems, unless the Uwais committee report was implemented to the letter.

“I support it (Uwais’s report) one thousand times. Look, let me tell you, it is now time for us to follow the people, to agree with what the people have said. It is now for us, the PDP to agree with what the people say because it is said that the voice of the people is the voice of God. We do not have to behave as if we are not part of the people of this country.

“If the Uwais’s report recommends that before you go for a second term as a serving Governor, you have to resign three months to the end of your tenure, it is in the interest of this country. It is for the interest of peace and unity of this country. If it recommends that all elections petitions must be disposed of before a winner is sworn into office, what is wrong with that, if we have the interest of this country at heart.

“I am always for the interest of this country. And I believe the President also has the interest of the country at heart. Forget some of the Governors who are just members of PDP by accident and rode on that platform to become Governors and they want to put this country in a mess.  It was the President who initiated the issue of electoral reforms, when he said that Nigeria’s electoral process was flawed,” he said.
