Sagbama LGA lifts Penawou Peace/Unity Cup

Sagbama L.G.A have emerged winners of the Penawou Peace/Unity Cup football competition. In the finals played at the Government College, Bomadi Football field Sagbama defeated Udu Local Government Area of Delta State 4-2 on penalties after the game had ended 1-1 at regulation time.

In his speech the Governor of Bayelsa State, Timipre Sylva charged the sponsor Prince Joe Penawou to host next year’s edition in Bayelsa to foster the bond of unity between Delta and Bayelsa States .

Represented by the SSG, Chief Gedion Ekeowei, Gov. Sylva expressed delight at the effort of Prince Penawou in fostering peace and unity in the Niger Delta region in general and Izon nation in particular through sports.

For his part the Delta State governor, Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan assured the people of Bomadi that next year’s edition will be in the new Bomadi mini stadium.

Gov Uduaghan represented by Dr. Bello Bibobra Orubebe the Delta State environment Commissioner, disclosed that the tournament is very crucial at this period of the Federal Government’s amnesty programme.

Also speaking the sponsor Prince Joe Penawou who is the Iyasere of Akugbene Mein Kingdom said it is his belief that productive energies of Niger Deltans be positively channeled in different spheres of human endeavor especially with the Federal Government’s amnesty programme.

Assuring that with the enthusiasm of the spectators and the success of this year’s edition he intends to enlarge next year’s edition and make it an annual event were new talents will be discovered.

Prince Penawou then disclosed that it is his passion for peace anddevelopment in the Niger Delta that are the motivation behind his donation and sponsorship of the Penawou Peace/Unity cup competition.

Sagbama with its victory went home with a giant trophy and 500,000, Udu got 300,000 and silver medals while Burutu who had earlier beat Ekeremor 2-1 in the 3rd place match got 200,000.
