THE Ijaw Monitoring Group (IMG) has described the ruling of a Lagos High Court, Igbosere, rejecting the alleged confessional statement of one of the accused persons over the killing of late Pa Alfred Rewane, Mr. Elvis Irenuma, as another bold statement from the judiciary as the only pillar of justice and hope of the masses.
In a statement signed by Comrade Joseph Evah, Coordinator of IMG, the Ijaw group said, the “ruling, coming two weeks after Justice Oyewole’s judgment on Olabode George and other accused on the NPA saga, was enough reason for Nigerians to have faith in the judiciary’s ability to save the nation.
“We are aware that some powerful forces wanted the lives of these innocent boys to be wasted and so they manipulated the case at that time to threaten the young men with death to sign already prepared statements to cover-up the actual killer of our great Niger Delta hero.
“Justice A. O. Williams of Lagos High Court, without fear or favour, declared that the statement brought before her court, alleged to be written by Mr. Elvis Irenuma, were not written voluntarily by him. This ruling shows there is hope for the masses in Nigeria.â€
The Ijaw group also stated that the death of four persons in custody out of the seven accused persons shows that those behind the killing wanted innocent people eliminated to divert attention, adding that the former personal aides of the Niger Delta leader has suffered in detention for over 13 years.
“We hope that more Justice Williams and justice Oyewole will emerge in Nigeria for the good of our nation and it is our prayer that justice is done to the remaining accused persons speedily.
