Reps urge Minister to arm civil defence

By Tordue Salem

ABUJA—The House of Representatives Committee on Interior yesterday urged the Minister of Interior to comply with an existing law mandating the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corp (NSCDC) to carry arms in the  exercise of its duties.

The Committee gave the charge yesterday at the headquarters of the Corps, where it went for oversight.

The Chairman of Interior Committee, Mr.Jeimon  Manwe (PDP) who expressed shock that the Minister of the Interior was yet to implement ammunition for the corps, assured the NSDC boss that the Green Chamber will intensify pressure on the Ministry to have it included in the 2010 budget estimates.

Manwe recalled that the bill mandating the corps to be armed had been signed into law, wondering why its implementation  was still on hold.

According to him “The corps has proven to all that it can be counted on in terms of maintaining peace in the country; there is no way you will expose its members to cartels and criminals with bare hands; for them to carry out their functions, they have to be armed adequately.”
