With an eight strokes margin, Martin Odoh of Minna Cantonment Golf Club in Niger state won the 2009 MicCom Classic in Ada last weekend.
Odoh’s win last weekend was his third in his eight years career as a professional golfer and he credits it to some changes he has recently incorporated into his game.
“I think the changes are paying off and I just hope to get a lot better. I will cherish this win not because it was my first time to win at MicCom but because, virtually all the big names in the country are present at this event†he said.
Odoh, whose younger brother won last year’s edition, pocketed a handsome sum of N300, 000 for his effort over four days. He had shot 64, 69, 71, 68 to total 272 sixteen under par at the par 72 MicCom Golf and Country Club in Ada Osun state.
Holland based Ali Abdullahi returned on the last with a 64, eight under par to snatch up the runner up prize at the N3million worth championship, beating number one ranked Umoh Edet to the third place.
Over 120 professional and amateur golfers gathered over the weekend for the yearly championship that has now gotten the backing of mobile commutation giant MTN and First bank Nigeria Plc.
Captain of the Club, Dr Bayo Faforiji expressed appreciation to the sponsors who have been able to help the club to extend the deliverables for the players that featured in the five days event.
“We hope the support can be sustained†he said, adding that MicCom investment to the development of golf is unparallel in the country and the coming of corporate support will go a long way to sustain the development of the game in Osun state
