NEPAD, NCGA farmers partner on more cassava

By Chidi Nkwopara

OWERRI—TO increase cassava production in Imo State, the state leadership of New Partnership for Africa’s Development (NEPAD) says it would partner with the state chapter of Nigerian Cassava Growers Association (NCGA) to achieve the target.

The State NEPAD/APRM Coordinator, Mr. Kingsley Ononuju, made the promise when he paid host to the executive members of NCGA in his office.

Describing cassava as “the untapped gold of the country,” Ononuju, however, regretted that not much attention had been given to the production of the staple food in the country.

Ononuju recalled that recent research had proved that cassava has over 3,000 uses, ranging from food, confectionaries, livestock feed, industrial raw materials, starch, sugar, plywood, cello tape and ethanol.

He also expressed regret that out of the several uses of cassava, Nigerians have unfortunately limited its use to cassava flour, fufu, garri, tapioca and a few other types of food made from it.
