ABUJA—The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC has opposed the application brought before the Federal High Court, Abuja by former governor of Adamawa State, Mr Boni Haruna to enable him obtain his travel documents.

The former governor is facing a 28 count amended charges  which border on money laundering and stealing of public
funds totalling N161 million .

In his application, Boni Haruna is seeking the leave of the court to travel to the United States of America for medical treatment. But counsel to EFCC, Paul Erokoro, (SAN), urged the court to dismiss the application  as it
lacks merit.

According to the prosecution counsel, the accused person has failed woefully in providing substantial materials
before the court on why he should be granted his travel document.

“In application of this nature, the onus is on the accused person to place enough fact before the court to justify why it should use its discretion. But I say the documents before the court are not enough,” he said..

Canvassing further he said there were well over 20 teaching hospitals in Nigeria as well as other well equipped
medical centres but that Boni Haruna did not visit any before seeking to travel abroad for medical treatment.

“He should at least say I have been to such and such hospital in Nigeria and they don’t have the equipment that I

need or that is required for my diagnosis and so on. There should not just be a blanket assumption that there are no medical facilities in Nigeria .
