LASU: Group warns against keeping Hussein

By Victor Ahiuma-Young
A GROUP of activists under the umbrella of Education Rights Campaign (ERC), has kicked against the retention of Professor Lateef Hussain as the Vice Chancellor of the Lagos State University (LASU), Ojo, warning that peace would never return to the institution as long as Prof Hussain remains the VC.

ERC in a statement by Messrs. Hassan Taiwo Soweto and Bosah Chinedu, National Coordinator and Secretary respectively, said: “We of the Education Rights Campaign condemn the continuous failure of the Lagos State government to put an end to the lingering crisis that has shut down the Lagos State University (LASU) for five months.

“While their counterparts in other universities are writing examinations or engaged in other academic activities, LASU students have been forced to stay idly at home for this period even after the suspension of the four-month ASUU strike.

“We call on the Lagos State government and the state House of Assembly to halt the imposition of Prof. Lateef Hussain as Vice Chancellor on LASU staff and students as it is only this that can allow peace to reign again in LASU.

“We enjoin the Action Congress-led Lagos State government to live up to its motto ‘Democracy Forever’ by allowing the democratisation of LASU with the involvement of representatives of staff and students’ unions in all decision making organs and in the running of the school.”
