Group gives failed NDDC contractors ultimatum

WARRI—THE Niger-Delta Peoples Conference (NPDC), a non-governmental organization, has given contractors who abandoned projects awarded to them by the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) after collecting the total contract sums, seven days within which to refund the money or have their cases reported to the EFCC and ICPC.

National Coordinator of the group, Mr. Edisemi Yiki, said the group’s investigations revealed that the money collected by such contractors was in excess of N1 billion.

He said:  “A number of the contractors have failed to execute jobs awarded to them; some abandoned theirs half way and this is after collecting the contract sum amounting to several billions of naira, thereby, perpetuating the suffering of the people  and underdevelopment of the region.”

The group has, therefore, written to them through its solicitors demanding that the total sum of their respective contracts be returned to the office of the NDDC within seven days, while the EFCC and ICPC will be brought in to investigate the criminal aspect of the complaint.

He said the fraudulent contracts included the Opuama/Tsekelewu Rivers canalization, Okpele-Ama shore protection and canalization works.

Yiki said the group was formed to monitor the activities of contractors executing contracts in the Niger Delta, awarded by the federal government, NDDC and other government agencies.
