BENIN — THE authorities of the Edo state Board of Internal Revenue, have bust a syndicate, allegedly involved in the production of fake motorcycle plate numbers and motor licensing documents in the state.
The chairman of the Board, Dr Ese Owie, who paraded the suspects before newsmen, said they were arrested following a tip off, adding that their illegal activities had denied the state government millions of naira monthly.
Narrating the incident to newsmen, Dr Owie said that “in our quest to fight counterfeiting of fake plate numbers and licensing documents, we decided to open an office at forestry where they sale motorcycle. We discovered that 70 per cent of the motorcycle plate numbers in the state are either from Anambra or Enugu states. We discovered that the motorcycle dealers are assisting the touts in diverting our revenue.
“We invited them for a meeting and told them this must stop but we still learnt that they are still carrying out this illegal business. We decided to send our men there, who pretended that they want to buy motorcycle. Our men requested for Enugu plate number, they immediately produced it. That was how we rounded them up with the security men around†he stated.
Dr Owie further urged the people of the state not to patronize touts because “they parade fake vehicle or motorcycle documents.
The Board will not hesitate to prosecute any body involved in this because this money must go to government coffers so that we will be able to achieve the dreams of our Comrade Governor in making the state the best in terms of infrastructures and basis amenities of our peopleâ€.
