The Committee for  the Defence of Human Rights (CDHR) in the state said it was wrong for the Nigerian Army to abandon the treatment of an innocent Nigerian that was shot by a serving soldier for no reason.

Investigation showed that Ogo was shot when the soldier opened fire in the heat of an argument with a motor-cyclist at the checkpoint. He was rushed to the Army Barracks and kept in the military sickbay without proper treatment.

Chairman of the group, Barrister Oghenejabor Ikimi, told Saturday Vanguard, “Citizen Innocent Ogo was on the 20th August, 2009 at about 5:20pm, shot on the right leg by Lance Corporal Sadiq Garuba near a military checkpoint along  Warri/Sapele Expressway, Effurun while hawking gala.

“He hails from Ikwo Local Government Area of Ebonyi State and is residing with his cousin, Kalu Ogbonna, a commercial motorcyclist at Km 5, Effurun/Sapele Road, Effurun, Delta State, prior to this unfortunate incident and presently, he is languishing in a dispensary at the Army Barracks, Effurun as he had been abandoned by the Army Authority for his said cousin to bear his feeding and medical expenses to the chagrin of the later who has no means to foot same”, Ikimi stated.

His words: “We call on the Army Authority to foot all the medical expenses of the said Innoncent Ogo , who is presently in their custody as we shall not hesitate to slam a court action against Lance Corporal Sadiq Garuba and the Nigerian Army and claim damages at large against them should they continue to refuse to bear the medical expenses and feeding of the said victim  whose family lives in far away Ikwo in Ebonyi State”, he stated.
