Anambra teachers get pay rise

By Enyim Enyim

ONITSHA—The Anambra State Government has agreed to pay the long agitated 27.5% Teachers Salary Structure (TSS) to teachers from next month.

Chairman of the Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT) in the state, Chief Anthony Ugozor, made the disclosure yesterday, while addressing journalists on the delayed implementation of the TSS and  the suspension of the union’s strike in September.

He said the union had to suspend the three days strike, following a letter from the national leadership of the NUT, directing the Anambra State chapter to suspend the strike, since the state government had reached an agreement with the union to start payment in December.

“We received the letter three days after the resumption of schools in September and we had no option but to comply with the directive.”

Ugozor said the letter exempted them from going on strike,  which had been construed by some teachers in the state that he had compromised with government not to pay the TSS as soon as possible.
