Woman docked for child theft

…fooled husband with fake pregnancy

Jos — A middle-aged woman was, yesterday, arraigned before an Upper Area Court, Kabong in the Plateau State capital for allegedly stealing a baby girl belonging to another woman from the Plateau Specialist Hospital five hours after delivery.

The prosecution alleged that the accused, Aishat Mohammed was arrested on September 26 at the hospital where she stole the baby after feigning pregnancy for nine months.

She was said to have pretended to the unsuspecting mother, Mrs. Lami Mathias to assist in cuddling the baby and attempted to make away with the baby, but for the vigilance of another woman who alerted one of the doctors.

Sensing that the game was up, she dropped the baby with another person and ran off, but was eventually caught atop of a commercial motor cycle and taken to the police.

It was alleged that she had successfully deceived the husband that she was pregnant by using various sizes of calabashes to feign pregnancy and ensured that she had no union with her husband claiming to be acting on doctor’s instruction.

Although the accused, who seemed confused did not make an appropriate plea after the charge was read to her, she was granted bail in the sum of N30,000 by the presiding judge, Mrs Ladi Nyako who directed that she should provide a credible surety and deposit two of her passport photographs with the court.
