KADUNA — Former Governor of Kaduna State and Chairman of the Senate Committee on Finance, Senator Ahmed Mohammed Makarfi, has expressed his support for the passage of the Freedom of Information (FoI) Bill if Nigerian journalists would be more responsible in their duties.
Makarfi said that the FoI Bill is a good idea, but stressed that he will not support a situation where people will be put on trial on the pages of newspapers based on unsubstantiated allegations and petitions.
The former governor said that in recent times the integrity of many people have been dented following their alleged trials on the pages of newspapers by media practitioners.
He, however, said that although there were adequate legal provisions in the constitution covering the operations of the media, there was the need to strengthen the law in view of the increasing hazards facing journalists in the course of their jobs.
Makarfi spoke weekend at Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, while receiving an award of excellence from the students of the Department of Mass Communication in the institution.
He was represented at the occasion by his former Director-General, Media and Publicity, Mallam Mukhtar Sirajo.
