Policemen went haywire, kill 2

By Albert AKPOR
LAGOS—WHILE millions of Nigerians were busy celebrating the country’s 49th Independence anniversary Thursday, some trigger happy policemen allegedly from Adekunle Divisional Headquarters went haywire, shooting sporadically and killing two innocent persons in error.

Several others who received gunshot wounds are said to be recuperating at various undisclosed hospitals.  Venue was Alagomeji area of Yaba and time was 9.00pm.

Sources said a group of men and women who were engrossed in the Independence mood were in a social joint having fun when a team of anti-robbery squad apparently on random raid, stormed the area and started shooting sporadically.

The fear of being hit by stray bullets, sources said,  forced the celebrants to scamper for safety.

Police, Saturday Vanguard learnt,  got hold of three persons including a lady identified as Bimbo Adeniji.  They were reportedly hauled into a waiting police patrol van while other policemen continued their shooting.  According to sources, they reportedly shot into a stationary bus in the dark where some of the fleeing persons went to hide thereby killing one instantly, while the other was said to had died moments later.

One of the deceased persons was identified as Ibrahim Olojode while the identities of others could not be ascertained as at the time of filing this report.  However, on sensing that they had killed innocent persons, the team was said to have ordered those earlier arrested to jump down and leave, while they zoomed off.

But irate youth of the area who had been nursing ill-feelings against police incessant harassments, and who equally felt their colleagues had been unjustly murdered, trooped into the streets in their numbers in the early morning of yesterday, protesting the killing.

They reportedly stormed the nearby State Criminal Investigation Department SCID Panti Yaba and threatened to raze down the buildings.  It took the prompt intervention of the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations (DCPOPs) to restore the situation to normalcy.

He was said to have had words with parents of the deceased and promised justice.

Meanwhile, the killer policemen have since been arrested and detained.  A senior source at the Police Public Relations office which described the shooting incident as “unfortunate” said the matter will be thoroughly investigated, adding that if the policemen are found culpable, they will be charged for murder.
