NATIONAL Universities  Commission (NUC) has sealed off  the Olympic University, a private university operating in Nsukka, Enugu State without the commission’s approval.

Officials of the commission,  accompanied by security operatives, stormed Nsukka, weekend, and shut down the university which they described as illegal.

The university commenced academic programmes in the town few months ago.

Leader of the NUC team, Professor Michael Madukwe, a visiting professor to University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), said  Olympic University was illegal because the proprietor whose name was not made available did not obtain necessary approval before he established it.

The proprietor was said to have taken to his heels on sighting the NUC officials, but the registrar of the university, Dr. Emeka Umeh, said to be a retired staff of the University of Nigeria, and some students of the “illegal” institution met with the officials.

Addressing the students numbering about 3,000, Madukwe said that the establishment of the university was not known to the NUC, informing the students that they had no reason being there.
