New political alliance: Buhari, Tinubu meet

By Emeka Mamah

KADUNA – Former Head of State and presidential candidate of the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) in the 2007 presidential election, General Mohammadu Buhari and former Lagos State Governor, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, yesterday, met to forge a new political alliance on the electoral reform process in the country.

The  meeting was held at General Buhari’s residence in the Malali area of Kaduna and it was learnt that they discussed among things, the electoral reform; formation of a mega party in the country as well as the conduct of the 2011 general election.

The meeting was said to be a follow up to a similar one held between the former Vice-President, Atiku Abubakar and former Governor of Sokoto State,  Alhaji Attahiru Bafarawa.

Although General Buhari did not comment on the full details of his parley with Asiwaju, he said, “We discussed and he (Tinubu) has gone to see his friend, Senator Abu Ibrahim.”

However, Tinubu told newsmen that they discussed the electoral reforms and how to move the nation forward by identifying Nigerian leaders who have the potentials to move the country forward.

His words: “Yes, we met for the purpose of electoral reform. There is this saying that nearly anybody can steer the ship of a group or nation, but not everybody can chat the course for a nation. To have leaders who combine the two is very crucial for the success of a nation.

“For example, in America, Thomas Payne and Thomas Jefferson were close to the Queen and close to the Crown. They were able to put together a constitution that saved America and made the country endure for over 200 years.

“We have to forget the attitude of failure and believe in ourselves; that we can do it. Yes, we can. If Obama didn’t believe in himself, he would not have been president of the United States of America today.

We have seen the trend of our country; we have seen our developmental potentials,” he said.
