IYC pioneer scribe dies in auto crash

By Samuel Oyadongha
Yenagoa—Tragedy struck in the early hours of Sunday as the pioneer Secretary of Ijaw Youth Council (IYC), Mr. Clayton Daunemigha, was killed in ghastly accident along the Opokuma road in the Kolokuma-Opokuma local government area of Bayelsa State.

The late Daunemigha, an accountant, was until his death a staff of the state treasury department of the Ministry of Finance.

Witnesses told Vanguard that the deceased and four others were returning from a social event at Opokuma when the tragic accident occurred around 4am, but his companions were lucky to be alive as they escaped unhurt.

The 2008 Toyota Corolla model in which the deceased and his companions were traveling was said to have plunged into a burrow pit filled with water on the side of the road after skidding off the winding road some distance away from the East-West road.

Vanguard gathered that the deceased, who was driving the ill-fated vehicle, was trapped inside while other occupants of the car managed to escape.

Attempts by his confused companion to get him out of the car under the water proved abortive, as the entire doors were said to have jammed, prompting them to rush back to the road to flag down coming vehicles to help in the rescue operation.

It was, however, was too late when help eventually came to the trapped man who was driving the car as he was already dead when he was dragged out to the surface.

The body of the deceased had since been deposited at the Okolobiri General Hospital mortuary.

When this reporter visited his home, the deceased wife and four children had relocated to his father’s apartment, off the Imgbi road, which was besieged by army of sympathizers.
