Independence: Chime asks Nigerians to support govt’s devt initiatives

By Tony Edike

ENUGU—As Nigerians mark 49 years of nationhood, Governor Sullivan Chime of Enugu state has enjoined well-meaning Nigerians to support the different tiers of government  in their various development initiatives aimed at uplifting the living standard of the entire populace.

Chime made this plea in his speech to mark Nigeria’s 49th independence anniversary.

According to him, “as our country marks this milestone in our march to nationhood, I want to seize this opportunity to congratulate all Nigerians on the occasion of this independence anniversary and to enjoin my fellow countrymen and women to join hands with governments at all level to make our country better for all of us.

“As proud inheritors of that creation, the challenge is for us all to keep the dream of independence alive. In this period of global economic meltdown, it will also be fatal to overlook the urgency that this day demands. This is, therefore, a wake-up call for all Nigerians to demonstrate abiding faith in our country and to look forward to the future with hope.”

The Governor also praised President Umaru Yar’Adua for what he referred to as his “genuine efforts toward revamping our economy and the giant strides he has achieved since assuming office on May 29, 2007.”
