OWERRI—Imo State Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) arrested a total of 9,230 offenders, while it also recorded 148 road accidents  between January and September this year.

The Sector Commander, Mr. Angus Ibezim, disclosed this while briefing newsmen on his Command’s preparedness for the nationwide road safety youth awareness campaign rally scheduled for Owerri.

“No fewer than 474 casualties were reported in the 148 road traffic crashes, while 84 people died instantly in the reported crashes. The most prevalent causes of the crashes are dangerous driving, dangerous overtaking, overloading and excessive speed”, he said.

Saying that the theme of this year’s campaign is “say no to road traffic crash”, Mr. Ibezim  lamented that the crashes badly affect children.

He recalled with grief a road traffic crash that occurred at Okigwe last year, where two unidentified children lost their mother in a fatal accident and appealed to all road users to imbibe safe driving culture.

Enumerating some of the problems facing his Command, Mr. Ibezim said they include dilapidated or collapsed roads, lack of major equipment such as tow truck, ambulance, lack of political will by government to enforce ban on indiscriminate use of siren, safety helmet, tinted glasses and inadequate personnel.
