Election tribunal sacks councillor for lack of academic qualification

By Austin Ogwuda
ASABA—THE  Delta North Local Government Election Petition Tribunal sitting in Asaba has nullified the election of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) councillor representing Ward 7 in Aniocha North local government council, Mr. Okonji Ojelukwuelim, on the ground that he did not possess the minimum academic qualification.

This followed a petition filed by an Action Congress (AC) candidate, Mr. Nwaegbo Nwamessiah. The tribunal held that the sacked councillor did not possess the required qualification to contest for the office at the time of the election, pointing out that the Modern Three Certificate presented by him fell short of the Senior School Certificate qualification as required by Delta State Local Government Laws 2004.

This is the first upset Delta North Local Government Election Petition Tribunal, which was reconstituted for more than three times due to avalanche of petitions over alleged bias, has recorded.

The  latest Tribunal, headed by Justice Dorubo Narebor, has, therefore, ordered the sacked councillor to vacate his seat and hand all government property in his possession to the chairman of the local government council immediately.

It also directed the State Independent Electoral Commission (DSIEC) to conduct fresh election into the vacant seat.
