Edo lawmaker escapes assassins’ bullet

By Simon Ebegbulem
BENIN—THE member rep-resenting Etsako Central constituency in Edo State House of Assembly, Mr. Chris Umogbai, escaped death by the whiskers last Tuesday after suspected assassins stormed his GRA residence in Benin City.

It was learnt that the armed men accosted a car similar in colour to that of the lawmaker in the area and shot the occupant, thinking it was their target.

However, Umogbai who was driving behind the vehicle diverted to a junction close to his house to drop a friend before the armed men rained bullets on the black coloured SUV.

Umogbai, who spoke to newsmen shortly after the incident, said the armed men laid ambush in his area, adding that he was lucky he did not follow the SUV they eventually attacked, which was similar to his own vehicle.

According to him, “it was shortly after I dropped off my friend that I received a call that robbers invaded my area and the driver of the vehicle which I saw was killed in the process.

“The vehicle is just the same colour and make like my vehicle. Before this incident, I have been receiving several text messages from unknown persons but I just felt that some persons were just trying to be funny. But I thank God I am here today to tell the story.”

Umogbai added that the matter had been reported at the state police command and that detectives from the command had visited the scene of the incident and took away the bullet-ridden vehicle and the corpse of the driver to an undisclosed mortuary.

The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, ASP Peter Ogboi, confirmed that the matter was reported and that the police was investigating the incident.
