2011: Ooni warns against violence, lawlessness

By Gbenga Olarinoye
The Ooni of Ife, Oba Okunade Sijuwade has warned electorate in Osun State to desist from all forms of actions capable of causing violence and lawlessness before and during the next general elections.

The monarch who gave the warning at a symposium organised by the Ife New Movement, a social Political  organisation, cautioned politicians against acts which may undermine the nation’s democracy in the next elections.

The Traditional Ruler ruled out the possibility that the 2011 elections would witness violence, stressing that the elections would be peaceful if politicians in the country could love their nation and the masses they want to govern.

Oba Sijuwade who was represented by the Wakesin of Ife, Chief Abioye Olatunbosun, noted that previous elections in the country were characterized by violence due to activities of the various political parties in the country, just as he identified poor sensitization as one of the causes of violence during and after elections.

His words “If truly the purpose of contesting an election is to serve the society, then it will be fundamentally and morally wrong for a party that lost in an election to embark on violence. This simply shows that our people do not really want to serve but they are after their personal purses.

“It is very important for our people to watch out and steer clear of all violent tendencies which may affect the growth of our state and nation at large as the Political gladiators warm up for the next general elections. Our people should know that the consequence of political violence is not always palatable and the masses are always at the receiving end. We must avoid a repeat of the old days in this present age,” Oba Sijuwade added.
