Zamfara to relocate flood victims

Talata-Mafara (Zamfara) – The Zamfara Government has pledged to relocate the victims of the flood disaster which occurred in Talata-Mafara town on Tuesday.

The disaster, which occurred at about 3 a.m. due to a downpour lasted about 12 hours and rendered more than 207 people homeless.

Gov. Mahmud Shinkafi made the pledge yesterday in Talata-Mafara, when he paid a visit to the affected area.

According to him, the relocation is aimed at preventing a future occurrence of the flood in the area.

He advised people to stop building their houses on waterways, saying he had directed the state Urban and Regional Planning Board (ZUREPB) to commence demolition of all illegal structures in order to safeguard the lives and property of people in the state.

He urged the people to evacuate their drainage systems as part of measures to avoid future occurrence in other parts of the town.

Shinkafi, who said the state government would provide relief materials for the affected people, ordered the state Emergency and Management Agency (ZEMA) to assess the level of damage caused by the disaster.

He called on the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to provide relief materials for the victims.
